Whoa... I just had a brush with DEATH! Should have known better! Just when I start thinking (as the dogs cross their legs and refuse to pee in the back yard) it won't happen to me...
"Yeah, it's thundering... and lightning... but what are the odds that anything will actually hit me? I mean, here I am among all of the people in Shreveport, strolling through the yard, what are the chances of a bolt landing on top of my head? Mmm... I better hurry up. The thunder is one right after the other... Nah- I'm just being paranoid. I'll sing one more verse of 'Tinkle in the Grass' to motivate the doggies and then I'll go in." I approach the back door, reach out and grab the doorknob and
SHAZAAAM!
A burst of light exploded around me! Reflecting off the glass in the door in front of me! Flashing on either side of my eye sockets! ELECTRICITY zapped the hand that held the doorknob and I yelped and jumped through the doorway. Thank God above I was under a cover!!! Gracie-dog took off running through the house and I just stood there shaking uncontrollably. When I was around 9 years old I was riding on the "Swings" ride at a local amusement park and was a little afraid thinking what if I fall? I remember looking down at my shadow keeping up with me on the ground and I thought... "Oh, it's silly to be afraid. Nothing is going to happen to me on this ride. Just think of how many people ride the swings every day, every year!" Just then, the ride malfunctioned and began lurching to the side and dropped us all, dragging us along the ground.
So, I should have known better... just when I think it won't happen to me...
To stand against the deep dread-bolted thunder?
In the most terrible and nimble stroke
Of quick, cross lightning?
(Wm. Shakespeare, "King Lear", Act 4, Scene 7)
